I have been involved in art since childhood, both as a maker and a teacher. In both 'lives' I have tried to stay close to the artist's steam-of-consciousness, to the idiosyncratic working processes of individual artists. Witnessing the creative acts of others has been a sacred privilege.
I particularly loved teaching drawing, art history and criticism, and working with student teachers and professional teachers. The most fun I had teaching involved setting up art programs in the Jamaican public schools while in the Peace Corps. I also enjoyed a grant I received studying the painting processes of students in the Jamaican School of Art, and exhibiting the results of the study in several universities.
Perhaps because I have a PhD in Art Education I have explored many art media and ,ideas. At times my work is drawn from contemporary postmodern feminism, but oil painting seems to require of me a more sensuous, immediate approach. I am conscious of artists who have influenced the spirit and the form of these works, including Turner, Joseph Rafael, Miriam Shapiro, James Turrell, Andy Goldsworthy.
My current studio/gallery is at the Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton VA 22079, Studio 403 in Building 4. Visitors are welcome Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday from 11AM-7PM, and Sunday from 11AM-5PM.
